Nye Parry is a composer and sound artist who produces creative work from his home studio. I met Nye through his wife and frequent collaborator Madi Boyd, whose home studio I also photographed.
I asked Nye:
When did you start working from home? I’ve always worked from home most of the time, alongside teaching work. Creative work I’ve always done from home, since I left university, really.
What made you decide to work from home rather than in premises offsite? Premises offsite for the kind of work I do is quite expensive and I don’t find I can generate enough income from it to cover that, really, is the truth. I’ve always enjoyed working from home because I can work when I want to and if I have an idea in the middle of the night I can, theoretically at least, get up and do something about it, so I find that very convenient.
What do you like best about working from home? The convenience of having it there and now, with Madi having her studio in the same house, we often work on joint projects, I do a lot of sound work for Madi’s installations and videos, so it’s nice to be able to come together for lunch in-between our two spaces.
What aren’t you so keen on/are there any difficulties in working from home? Possibly there are a lot of distractions, but these days with the internet there are a lot of distractions wherever you go to work really, so it doesn’t make that much difference. I think distractions are a general problem rather than a working from home problem. I did a project a couple of years ago where I used somebody else’s studio and ‘went to work’ to do it because I could use a bigger surround sound studio than I had access to at the time and I enjoyed that process actually, of going out to work.
What is your favourite feature of your workspace? My books. I like having my books close, even though perhaps they feed more into my academic work than directly into my creative work, they are an inspiration.

Home / Work is a documentary photography project featuring people who work from home/live where they work. I am interested in how people design these spaces and how the lines between home and work are defined or blurred. If you are interested in participating in the project please get in touch.
