A Zine about January 2021

I'm still enjoying making my monthly zines so here we go for another year! Being totally honest January was very quiet shoot-wise, so I've been working on making website updates, catching up on travel photography I hadn't had chance to process before, and very, very busy in my role as projects director at Shutter Hub. I thought I'd try bringing back my monthly recommendations, too, in case they are of interest!

We managed to make ourselves go outside for some sort of walk every day in January (except the first) so my phone is full of pictures of trees, interesting hedges, sunbathing seagulls and the occasional empty noticeboard and gutter find because I just can't quit! We kept the Christmas decorations up until epiphany and I miss the more colourful bulbs but we still have our year-round fairy lights to help brighten the days. I'm still into trying to capture steam and snowflakes when the opportunity allows, and playing with the instant back I cobbled together for my Mamiya RB67 always gives me a moment of calm.

Things I've enjoyed:

Food: Thanks to a reminder from my sister I'm giving 'new recipe of the week' another go - this was pretty much the only new year's resolution I've ever managed successfully, a few years back, and I enjoyed getting out of the loop of repeating the same things all the time, so I'm trying it again. So far I've tried and enjoyed these lovely madeleines, chocolate peanut butter shortbread sandwiches (though these are very big and very sweet!), a different lovely madeleine recipe and pecan pie from The American Diner Secret recipe book I got for Christmas. All delicious but none of them feature in my zine because it was dark when I made them. Feb will feature more savoury things, I needed cake-like things for January!

Music: Mostly I listen to the radio in the day, but when I'm walking to the shops I currently listen to Post Human: Survival Horror by Bring me the Horizon because it pretty perfectly captures the current mood and when I'm baking it's been Existential Reckoning by Puscifer.

Podcasts: Photography-wise I'm really enjoying Vision Slightly Blurred from PhotoShelter for keeping up with what's going on in the photography world and Talk Art is really inspiring for hearing from artists in a variety of disciplines.

Reading: I have not been great at reading lately, but I really enjoyed Aww magazine, which I got through my Stack subscription (they send you a different unusual magazine each month) I've also just started reading The Discovery of Slowness by Sten Nadolny, which I got second-hand (but looks brand new) from Awesome Books thanks to a mention of it by Christoph Niemann in his episode of Abstract, The Art of Design on Netflix (which is a great series to make you feel inspired, too!)

TV: Highlights in January were The Serpent on iPlayer, Vikings on Amazon Prime and Schitt's Creek on Netflix- just like everyone else it took us a few episodes to get into this but it was well worth it, I absolutely loved it and miss the characters.

What have you been enjoying?
