Towards the end of last year I was commissioned by Kids in Museums to document their annual Takeover Day, at Burgh House & Hampstead Museum. Takeover Day is a celebration of children and young people’s contributions to museums, galleries, arts organisations, archives and heritage sites. It’s a day on which they are given meaningful roles, working alongside staff and volunteers to participate in the life of the museum. At Burgh House & Hampstead Museum a class of children from a local school split off into teams to carry out research and plan an exhibition, how to publicise the exhibition through posters and social media, create learning activities and work in front of house, welcoming visitors to the museum, guiding them around and taking payment in the gift shop.
It was a wonderful day and fantastic to see the children take on all the roles with such enthusiasm and professionalism. It was also the first time I'd visited Burgh House, which was a really lovely museum and I'd recommend visiting.
