Summer is always a bit quieter work-wise. It’s a good opportunity to catch up on projects, do admin and have a bit of time off.
I’ve had some really interesting commissions this spring and summer. As well as my exhibition at St Martin-in-the-Fields, on display until November (thanks to M. Lloyd for the picture of me looking at it!), I’ve photographed lovely events, portraits, lifestyle and interiors for clients including The Goldsmiths’ Company, the Leathersellers’ Company, Firstsite, Goethe-Institut London and (the UK’s first?) Guinea Pig Festival. I’m also really pleased to have been a workshop facilitator as part of Polly Braden’s ‘Against the Tide’ project with The Guardian, working with Teens2Twenties in Brightlingsea, Tendring to create postcards that were exchanged with other young people in groups in Whitehaven, Blackpool and Weston-super-Mare. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to attend the exhibition opening at Arnolfini in Bristol, to meet the other workshop leaders and project participants, and experience Polly’s incredible work.
I’ve continued working on my cultural community documentary photography project and now that I’ve started to build up a more cohesive collection of images I thought it would be useful to make a little booklet to show people when I’m talking about it, rather than my slightly garbled verbal explanations. We took a trip to Glasgow and the Isle of Arran with family, where we finally had some cooler weather and rain, a welcome break from the relentless heat we’ve been having here in Essex. I ate a lot of delicious food (best strawberry tart ever), visited some great exhibitions, was entranced by the huge range of zines and books at Good Press, did a lot of walking, met a zorse, watched a caber being tossed and tried not to bash into too many people with my enthusiastic but uncoordinated dancing at my aunt’s ceilidh.
Back in the spring I made a zine about blossom, ‘in bloom‘, which I loved making at the time but then got distracted working on other things.
